Volcom

Giving the Volcom stone some proper velocity. Personal R&D.

Behind the Scenes

My initial storyboard, and while it’s quite rough, you can see how the concept evolved into the final version, where I added full texturing and a variety of effects in After Effects. Still, this captured the core idea.

Working with a restricted color palette allowed me to maintain a sharp focus on visual hierarchy, balance, and overall composition. And I knew I wanted this piece to be textured and gritty.

Texturing is pure play. Building custom textures and tweaking them in real time feels less like work and more like a game.

I tried to capture the true essence of Volcom through these objects. While the brand spans a wide range of extreme sports and fashion, its roots are in skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing.

Since skateboarding and snowboarding are the closest to my heart, I chose to make them the main focus here.

All in all, this project was such a joy to make!

My biggest takeaway was learning how to art direct my own work, experimenting freely without clinging too tightly to a single idea, while also knowing when to finally call it finished.
